BOOKS TO KEEP
"Be the change you wish to see in the world."
Books to Keep started in my home town of Nashua, New Hampshire almost 20 years ago. It was a one time project to bring books to children at our local Adult Learning Center pre-school program. Many of these kids left their homes with only the clothes on their backs and were living in a shelter. Our goal was to create a personal library of treasured books for them to keep. Did you know that homeless children may not be able to apply for a library card without a permanent address. Added to that may be the inability of their parents to bring them to a public library.
I now live in The Villages, FL where my neighborhood book club started a new version of Books To Keep in December of 2013. Many of our members are retired educators. During one of our discussions we talked about our love of reading and the changes in our society. I mentioned the program I had worked on many years ago, and the flame was caught by our members. To date, our group of 21 members has delivered more than 30,000 books through 6 local food pantries in Sumter, Marion and Lake Counties. In fact, the entire neighborhood is now involved in our program.
I urge everyone who loves to read and loves children to think about what one book could do to change a life. It really just starts with one. Please join us by creating your own Books To Keep program in your home town.
